There isn't any authority on "Romanized" Thai language as even the Thai authorities spell Thai words in English differently. Just take a look at road signs and you will know what I mean. I personally feel what Bro rocketscientist is doing is commendable. If I were to use your spelling with the intonations, I would probably pronounce it wrongly as how do we know what the intonations mean when we don't get to "hear" it? But using what Bro rocketscientist has provided, it appears quite straight forward except for the "swang" and "song". |

Re: Thai langauge kindergarten class
This is only my humble opinion and observation and I'm sure that will be some disagreement which will probably cause some of you guys to flame me.
I see a fellow samster trying to contribute to the forums by starting this thread. For what it's worth, I feel the effort is commendable. There are several who has helped by posting positively, giving some corrections, etc but I also noticed that some "slightly" out of topic posts has also come in. I'm fine with a little humour but I feel that some of the intentions are not to humour but has a pinch of ridicule in it. If not checked, then this thread will eventually go to waste and becomes really a kindergarten class where nothing is really taught but every child is probably only playing. I feel that those who can, please do help to contribute. Like some has already done, sharing the various dictionaries or books to buy is good. Maybe also tapes and other materials that can help those who are interested. For those who can speak Thai, you could assist by expanding on what the threadstarter has provided. For example, Bro suteerak1099 could maybe provide some "lessons" here on intonations like what those "marks" above mean, etc. Or help by showing us some examples of how to use the words in phrases or sentences. I don't know. I'm just a newbie so maybe my expectation of a good thread whereby fellow brothers in the know share, is but just a dream? My 2 cents worth. |

PPle who read these w/o hearing may not get it correct too. Eg, They may read Neung as Niuung, Sam as the Sam of sammyboy

I'm only a newbie just learning the ropes in this forum so I'm afraid there's actually no wisom there. But I understand what you mean. Some may reason that if you don't know, instead of teaching, you should be asking. May be true. But in some other threads, there was a samster who requested pictures of Geylang ladies but responses were things like "Why you don't start first?" or Waiting for you to start the ball rolling", etc. Anyway, what I was trying to put across is that a samster has an idea to start a thread to teach Thai language and maybe along the way, also learn. To me, that is commendable. Samsters in the "know" will and has already started contributing by giving imputs, corrections, their versions, etc. But I sensed that there were posts which were trying to instigate "flames". Maybe I'm wrong. Whatever it is, I thought by voicing it out may help to keep this thread in check. I apologise if I should have done that. My 2 cents worth. |
