to be a little more specific, mai bpen rai is literally more like "wont become bad", otherwise associated with conotations of "nevermind"/"its ok". and yes, its a common gesture/phrase they use in myriads of situations.

alternatively, subject to scenarios;

1) someone apologizes, you may reply using mai-bpen-rai "nevermind"/"its ok"
2) someone thanks you for assistance rendered or for something received, you may reply using yin-dee "you're welcome"

look = child (family)
