Can you really hide your IP address from your ISP ?

The main forum has been promoting a couple of VPN stuff, but so far with the free stuff it works like the famous anonymouse where you will assume another IP address on your destination server.

But what about your ISP ?

Say you are a famous poster with the handle "Doggie" and someone from the higher authority is not happy with your posting, is it not possible for your local ISP to track you down ? Even if you're using one of those proxy sites to mask your IP address ?

Is it necessary at all in the first place for the person who wants to track you down to seek your IP address from the destination server (the website where you posted your stuff) ?

And what about watching YouTube videos ? Say a new movie was illegally uploaded onto YouTube and you watched the move on YouTube channel. Now the film makers are not happy and they want to sue you. Possible for your ISP to track you down if, again, you have gone through another proxy site to mask your IP address?

Re: Can you really hide your IP address from your ISP ?

There is no simple answer. Security and privacy comes in many different strengths.

If your VPN company is dodgy, you've already lost the battle.

http://www.deepdotweb.com/2014/07/08...legit-or-shit/

There are also many VPN protocols some of which are more secure than others.

Asking whether VPN is safe is like asking whether your padlock will keep burglars out of your house. The answer is that will keep some out but not the most determined ones.

Internet security is the same. If you want to plan a murder or act of terrorism, chances are there are tools that can track you down no matter how hard you try to hide your identity.

However, if you're just downloading a movie or two, then it probably isn't worthwhile trying to track you down if you've made some effort to hide your IP address. The copyright holders will concentrate on the easy targets who didn't make any effort whatsoever to hide themselves.

Ghostsurf

GhostSurf is a computer software program that allows for anonymous surfing of the Internet. Like other software programs of this nature, Ghostsurf provides security for the private browsing of Internet websites. It also provides peace of mind. With Ghostsurf you get ideal Internet anonymity, which means that you have the ability to surf the web without be tracked or traced.

Tiagong issue lawyer letter to ISPs can liao...
ISPs will follow the law...

Provided the reason for tracking is legit lah... E.g. copyright infringements

For below reason?
'Say you are a famous poster with the handle "Doggie" and someone from the higher authority is not happy with your posting...'

ISPs will tell you... 'Not happy go zap the poster lor'...

I have been thinking of signing up a VPN too but if copyright infringement can really get ISP to trace down the IP address
then having VPN also no use.

If you use VPN, the copyright holder will not even know who your ISP is so how are they going to ask the ISP to track you down?

Re: Can you really hide your IP address from your ISP ?

you cannot hide your IP from your ISP because they are the one giving you access to the internet.

They have to assign the IP to you so that you can surf the net.

but you can try to hide your IP from external party

i have heard before the IP which external party can see is a group IP where many users shared the same IP address. not sure how true is that.

Re: Can you really hide your IP address from your ISP ?

Usage of a VPN is vital if you're concerned with security. IPvanish is ok. I also use one that can do "split" channels

You can choose which applications to go through VPN and what not to. Obviously now I will channel ALL bittorents thru vpn.

Browsers, it depends on what I'm surfing

Here's how you can set it. Your VPN provider/software may or may not have such a feature.

Your ISP can see the total amount of in/out traffic but that's about it.

While you are connected to the VPN your ISP sees all packets going to and coming from a single IP address (the entry-IP address of the VPN server your computer is connected to).

Your ISP can NOT see:
- the real packets header
- the packets payload (i.e. the content you send and receive)
- the real origin and destinations of the packets
- the "real" protocol you use
- the applications you use

This is because everything is encrypted via your VPN connection. The strength of the encryption depends upon what you VPN provider uses for encryption. The good ones use AES-256-CBC cipher.

Who are in trouble?

Only people who shared the downloaded movie with other people via BitTorrent, said Mr Steve Dalby, the former chief regulatory officer of Australian ISP iiNet, according to 2DayFM.

"They (Dallas Buyers Club LLC) can't detect downloaders so if I downloaded it but never shared it I wouldn't be concerned about it," he told Fairfax Media.

Re: Can you really hide your IP address from your ISP ?

CMIIW VPN provider will still have certain data on you, and to most they won't disclose, but with court order from relevant authority where they are incorporated or located, they are obliged to provide it, hence it will provide your connection IP address.

There are quite a few method out there for you to block these torrent spy peer's IP so you won't upload to them.
Or alternatively go into leech mode, but I still prefer to use earlier method.

There are no true way to hide your identity in the Internet, unless you are masking yourself as someone else (use other people computer/network)
