Try to avoid places that are too crowded. I also avoid those Thai festivities. Damn too many drunk kids and road accidents. You wouldn't want your girlfriend or wife to get molested in public places. When too crowed I siam far away or do private parties at someone's place. My motto is: Everyday is also Merry Christmas, New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali, TET, Thanksgiving, etc. when your pocket have tons of ready cash.
RIP to those poor souls. Very sad way to go away like this especially after seeing those pics.

I think as kiasu/kiasee sgporean, I'm never 100% loosened up, 90% perhaps. Maybe it's just the scouts motto "Be prepared" that prompts me to be cautious. Especially if you're travelling alone, be it biz trip or leisure, nobody can take care of your except yourself.
Sad beginning for many, but that's how life is- cruel. We can postpone holiday plans, delay appointments, but just can't put off the meeting with the big 1 up there.
