Re: A day too long
Ep 12
We had breakfast in the morning and Freya went with me to the bank after that. She accompanied me home and we had sex. In the late afternoon, she went home on her own.
In the meantime, in the Telgram group, there were 2 other new guys that joined the chat. Just like me, they were also new and introduced by someone else. they will also join the game tonight.
After dinner, I headed down to the condo in the Hougang area. The guard didn't ask any questions when I gave him the unit number.
When I arrived at the unit, the host was waiting for me.
Mike: Hi, Sam, right?
Sam: yeah....
He introduced himself and let me in to the apartment.
The house was very sparse. There were no TV and just a sofa in the living room that was resting against a wall in the corner. In the middle of the area was a large table, similar to those kind that you saw in a casino except smaller. There were some chairs around the table and another 2 guys were already there.
Mike introduced them as Tom and Yeo.
I took a seat next to Yeo. Since all of us were not friends and just here for a game, no one spoke to each other and each of us were indulged in our own mobile devices. Mike offered me a packet drink and I accepted it.
10 minutes later, another guy called Herman arrived. Xavier arrived last.
Xavier, Herman and Mike spoke briefly and I knew that was because they had been playing together for some time.
Since everyone had arrived, Mike announced that we should start the game.
It was a game of Texas hold'em.
For the first hour, I paid attention to the players and folded my cards many times. Yeo was a novice and he lost quite a bit of money. Tom was a careful player and he was even at the end of the hour. As for Xavier, Herman and Mike, they were seasoned players. Mike was the best amongst them and he won most of the money.
The next hour, I tried to be more daring and called "bluff" a few times. I wanted to lower their guard against me. During this hour, I lost about $3k, the most amongst the players.
Earlier we had already decided that we will play for 4 hours. So the next hour, I continued to "call" when I was supposed to "fold" and "fold" when I was supposed to "raise". I continued to pretend that I was bad at the game and I was pretty confident that I had created an impression that I was the worst player amongst them. At that point, I had lost a total about 6k.
Yeo lost almost 2k and looked extremely dejected. He asked if he could leave and we all agreed to let him go.
The last hour begun.
30 minutes in, only Xavier and I were the players left in that round.
There was about $600 in the pot and the table was showing ♥9 ♠9 ♣9 ♥6 ♥5. It was my turn to make a decision.
me: I raise $500
I pushed the chips into the pot. Normally I would "raise" by $50 or $100 each time. This was only the 5th time that I had gone above $200 over the course of the evening and all of those times, I had done a "bluff" and lost. If he took up my bait, then he would be falling into the trap that I had laid.
He looked at me and just like earlier, I did not show him any expressions. He thought for a moment before speaking.
Xavier: I raise another $1000....
He threw his chips into the pot and Herman and Mike looked at him in surprise. Mike instantly put up his hand to stop me from speaking.
Mike: Sam.... wait wait.......
Still expressionless, I merely nodded to acknowledge that I would allow him to speak first. Mike turned to Xavier.
Mike: Xavier... you're not new here... are you sure you want to bet that amount?....
Xavier: yes...
Mike studied Xavier for a moment before turning back to me.
Mike: ok... you can proceed.... what's your decision?
The moment Xavier raised the amount, I knew that this was the opportunity I had been waiting for. He must have 4 of a kind in his deck but I was not worried because I had a straight flush.
Sam: I raise to $15,000.....
Mike frowned.
Mike: oei.... Sam, I need to let you know that if you lose the game, you will need to pay the cash amount you are betting.... it's not "masak masak".....
Sam: I know.... and I've brought the amount.....
I opened up the bag that I had brought along and showed him the $15k in cash that I had withdrawn from the bank earlier. Xavier raised his eyebrows once he saw the money.
Sam: anyway, I've lost a lot and don't believe that he has 4 9s... I won't be so "suay" for the whole night........
Mike shrugged his shoulders.
Mike: well... up to you....
He turned Xavier.
Mike: Xavier.... back to you....
I deliberately stacked the 150 pieces of 100 dollars notes into the pot and I caught Xavier glancing at them a few times.
Xavier finally frowned. It was a lot for money for a him especially since I knew that he had a recently taken a $50k loan for the renovation of his new bto flat. Moreover, I also knew that he had yet to pay for the wedding dinner and their honeymoon trip.
He looked at me and I pretended to look away. I had learnt this from my previous job. It will give the impression that the person who looked away first had something to hide and my moment of fake weakness fueled his greed. I have managed to sway his decision.
Xavier: I didn't bring that amount with me.... if you don't mind, I will use my watch as a collateral first....
He dropped his $5k Tudor into the pot but I didn't mind.
me: so do you mean that you will "call"?
He nodded.
me: ok.... what do you have....
He grinned smugly.
Xavier: sorry, it's really your unlucky day.... I have 4 9s...
He flipped his cards over and I pretended to look shocked. He was about to reach out for the money in the pot when I stopped him.
me: wow... I can't believe that your cards are so good tonight.... but this time, I finally have a better hand than you....
I flipped open my ♠7 ♠8
Xavier: Oh fuck.....
His hands stopped in mid air as he stared disbelievingly at my cards. It took 2 seconds to register in his mind before he fell back on his seat and shook his head disbelievingly from side to side.
Mike, Herman and Tom looked stunned as well
Me: I guess I won.... well, Xavier.... your watch is worth at most $2k in the 2nd hand market..... so you can transfer the rest of the $13k to me now....
Xavier: wait.... er.... er.... I.... I...
His face had turned white now and I could see that he was trying to come up with an excuse because he had no money. I didn't spell it out and waited for him to admit it on his own. However, Mike didn't want to wait.
Mike: Xavier, you need to make the payment....
Xavier: I... I don't have the cash now....
He was stammering and I decided to help him further into my trap.
me: hmm... don't worry.... I know sometimes banks doesn't allow a transfer of so much money.... it's the same for me as well, that's why I brought cash along.... how about you take back your watch and we write an IOU for the $15k with your details now and you can pass me the money by next Friday?....
Mike: sounds fair to me.... Xavier, how?
Xavier: er.... er.... ok.... sure.....
As the host, Mike took down Xavier's details and wrote the amount he owed me on a piece of paper. We all signed on the paper and Mike handed it to me. There was still 20 minutes to go but Xavier got up.
Xavier: sorry.... I don't feel too good... I won't be continuing any more.....
Mike looked at the rest of us and we all agreed to let Xavier leave.
I stayed behind and won back another $3k from the group.
When the time was up, I left Mike's place with Herman and Tom. I thought Xavier would be waiting for me in the basement carpark but I didn't encounter him and made my way home.
It was already 2am when I reached home. I texted Freya and told her that my plan was a success. She replied almost immediately and told me that she was glad that it worked. I guessed that she was worried about me and was waiting for my message.
I told her to go to bed and she didn't complain.
