I seriously think that was nothing more than an innocent joke from the commentators ... though rather witty, since both Blissett & Barnes were playing for Watford at that time ... Elton John was then chariman.
Serie A was the richest league with the best foreigners then ... how to believe they could actually goof up like that?? Really a case of all niggers look the same?? But Blissett was really dark-skinned while Barnes was more brown, being Jamaican by descent.

Matthaeus was the captain, inspiration, motivation & thunderbolt (not unlike Riise or Carlos, but he's right-footed) in that German team ... so, yes, he was the assigned penalty-taker.
About the boot ... it's not so much as spoilt, but actually a brand-new pair ... the pair used in the semi-final was replaced with this one. As he was fully confident with the "yet-to-be-fully-seasoned" pair of boot ... he passed the buck to the player he trusted most.
Together with Klinsmann, they played for Inter Milan ... for the record, Klinsmann dun take penalties.
