Frankly, about 10-15 years when this freelance scene was developing, I dare say that who you saw in person was more or less what you saw on the advert. Because that time, no (or not as advanced) editing, filtering, whatever tech to enhance the photos/vids.
Ad media then was real, attitude and skills were another matter.
