Priced Out of Pattaya: Trickle-Down Economics in Asia’s City of Sin

Penelope Qiao’s first assignment for the East Asia Tribune saw her travel to Pattaya, the Thai beachside town with a reputation for debauchery. Traditionally a playground for middle-class Westerners, the city is emerging as a new destination for the super-rich, and the resulting premiumization has begun to price many lower-end tourists out of the market. Will Pattaya lose its mass-market appeal in favour of catching the big fish? Or will the budget market still find a way to be serviced?

Yesteryears in Bangkok, Pattaya, Hatyai , thai border town near Malaysia were excellent, unliked nowadays whereby prices hit the roof !!!. :(

In 2005, bar fine indeed was THB 200 and ST was THB 900 and less in agogo bars and even more cheaper in other beer bars. And u can get further discount and a free bottle of Singha in the beer bars :D !!!. No need wait until the night, having beer in the afternoon and also can screw a bar girl in a nearby ST hotel.

In 2005 barfines in Peppermint group were 600B. Beer bars BFs then were 200B

Barfines in rainbow bars at nana were also at 500-600baht during 2005. Not sure for beer bars since I'm not a fan of it. ;)

In 1995 at the walking street beer bars you only pay total of 300 baht all in for barfine + ST :D

I cannot accept the current price so I move on to another place 555. :p

Soapy Massage Parlours in Bangkok still provide good value though.
Especially the Turkish bath + sex is uniquely Thailand. :D

Nostalgia is ok, with blast from past (on pricing). But we all got to grapple with today's market pricing, unless you are like our PCC forumer here:p

Bf differs obviously in agg and beer bars. In Soi 33 (sorry to digress to Bkk), in 2003-5 the dead artistes bars were asking high bar fines circa 800-1000 (1200 on fri, sat). Just different packing, bit better dressed and ambience maybe. Once, I stayed past 0100, met gal at nearby drinking hole.

Also, keep in perspective the exchange rate then -circa 22-23? That's a 10% diff from current

Going to Pattaya for a few days soon. Family trip but can go out alone in evening for 1-2 hours. Wife always tired. Just a for a massage or a beer or so. You get the drift ;)

Any recommendations for full service massage or in-call services around beach road (low number soi)?
