Aston Villa vs Man United Preview

Aston Villa are likely to have eight first-team squad members unavailable for the game.

Carlos Cuellar has definitely been ruled out with a calf injury suffered ahead of the midweek win over Blackpool while fellow defender Habib Beye is also struggling after twisting his ankle in the warm-up against the Tangerines.

Stiliyan Petrov, Nigel Reo-Coker, John Carew, Emile Heskey, Steve Sidwell and Fabian Delph are out, but striker Gabriel Agbonlahor could come into the starting line-up after making his comeback from groin surgery as a substitute against Blackpool.

Manchester United are hopeful of having Patrice Evra available.

The France full-back limped out of Wednesday's Manchester derby with an ankle injury, which it was felt would keep him out of the Villa Park encounter.

However, Evra trained on Friday and could be involved, unlike Rafael who is sidelined by a dead leg, and

ROONEY ON THE MEND, SAY MAN UTD

Manchester United are preparing to welcome Wayne Rooney back from his American jaunt, believing their star striker will soon be ready for action.

Rooney has made just one substitutes' appearance since the end of September after being badly affected by an ankle injury.

Although he did come through England's Euro 2012 encounter with Montenegro, after which he claimed there was nothing wrong, Rooney did have an injury problem.

Last week United assistant-manager Mike Phelan revealed Rooney was being sent to Nike's plush HQ in Beaverton, on the west coach of the United States, for a week's conditioning work.

The 25-year-old, who recently signed a five-year contract extension after previously suggesting he was unhappy at Old Trafford, is due to return on Saturday and will be assessed by United's medical team on Monday.

That means there is no chance of Rooney being involved in England's friendly with France at Wembley, although - judging by the reports United have been receiving - it might not be long before Rooney is back.

"Wayne has been doing really well," Phelan told Key 103. "He has been training really hard, working morning and afternoon.

"Our people out there who are looking after him have been really pleased with his attitude and approach.

"All being well he can have a nice easy flight back. We will see where he is at on Monday but we think he will have improved immensely."

Damn it !! Man U & Alex Ferguson blew it once again...yet another draw, this time wif Aston Villa...nearly ended in a loss ..had they not woke up towards the end of the match...had been sleeping almost throughout the whole match..

When wil the so called 'Red Devils' ever learn ?? ..struggling against every team they play wif...big or small...small teams are even scoring against them wif relative ease and wif unknown players..OMG !! They can really forget abt the title, if Fergie is not going to recruit better players in Jan 2011 as he had said...best they can fight for is 2nd place...even tat is not assured wif this current group of jokers..scoring ogs, giving away penalties or allowing opposition to score against them so easily...WT Fish !

Rooney back as United move level with Chelsea

Manchester United's defender Patrice Evra celebrates scoring during the English Premier League football match against Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford in Manchester. United won 2-0.

Wayne Rooney made a winning comeback as a rare goal by Patrice Evra helped Manchester United to a 2-0 victory over nine-man Wigan at Old Trafford on Saturday.

England striker Rooney came on as a second half substitute - his first taste of action for a month after returning from the United States where he underwent conditioning work to aid his recovery from an ankle injury.

And despite announcing he wanted to leave Old Trafford - before doing a U-turn and agreeing a new five-year contract - Rooney received a warm reception from United fans before helping his side to a crucial win that put them level on points with Chelsea after the leaders' loss at Birmingham.

Evra opened the scoring on the stroke of half time before substitute Javier Hernandez sealed victory in the 77th minute.

Wigan were the better team in the first half but they ended the match with nine men after captain Antolin Alcaraz and striker Hugo Rodallega were sent off in the space of three second half minutes.

The visitors had arrived at Old Trafford seeking a first win over United, the previous 11 encounters between the two teams all ending in victory for Sir Alex Ferguson's men.

So one sided has this fixture proved in the past that United had managed to rattle up 35 goals in those 11 games, including 10 in two encounters alone last season.

Yet with Rooney and Hernandez starting on the substitutes bench, United struggled to seriously test Wigan keeper Ali Al Habsi as the visitors, the Premier League's lowest scorers, carved out the better chances in a lacklustre first half.

Sloppy defending allowed Spanish midfielder Jordi Gomez to blaze an early effort over the bar before Rodallega stung the finger-tips of United keeper Edwin van der Sar in the 10th minute.

Two minutes later Nani went close with a delightful curling effort which whistled narrowly wide of the post, but in a first half of few opportunities, one of the biggest cheers was reserved for Rooney when he was instructed by Ferguson to warm up on the sidelines.

While United attacking duo Gabriel Obertan and Federico Macheda struggled to impose themselves, Rodallega grew in confidence, the Wigan striker showing great imagination with an acrobatic effort that flew narrowly wide.

Manchester United's midfielder Park Ji-Sung (R) clashes with Wigan Athletic's midfielder Hendry Thomas (L) during the English Premier League football match at Old Trafford in Manchester. United won 2-0.

Van der Sar was forced to spread himself to block an effort by Charles N'Zogbia after Wigan's French midfielder had powered into the penalty area before Evra broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time.

The full-back was in the perfect position to meet Park Ji-Sung's deep cross, the Wigan defence falling asleep as the unmarked Evra was allowed to head past Al Habsi.

It was the beginning of the end for Wigan. Within 17 minutes of the second half they were reduced to nine men after Alcaraz and Rodallega were both sent off.

Alcaraz, who had been booked earlier, was red carded for a needless foul on Darren Fletcher in the 59th minute before Rodallega followed three minutes later for a two-footed challenge on Rafael da Silva.

Inbetween the red cards, Rooney came on for his first taste of action since October 16 and was denied his first second goal for his club this season when Al Habsi tipped his powerful header over the bar.

But Hernandez made sure of the points 13 minutes from time with a well paced header after connecting with Rafael's inch-perfect cross.

Traditionally, at half time, during the festive period of Christmas and New Year, is when the Red Devils move up a gear and step on the gas, to pull ahead of potential contenders for the title. :) :D

A very good weekend for United as main rivals Chelsea and Arsenal both failed to collect a single point to allow United to draw level on top of the BPL. :D

Now Chelsea 28, United 28, Arsenal 26.
