This happened to me before:

I was stopped at a road block by Thai soldiers on the road towards Aranyapretet.


They : where are u going?
Me : visit my friends in Aran.
They : spoke in Thai
Me : I don't speak Thai
They: You just said you don't speak Thai ..in Thai ( Put Thai Mai Dai )
Me: ya, a little ok. ( Put Thai nit noi )
They : look look see see the driver license n passport ( delay tactic ). Finally documents returned, gesturing .. GO!
Me : krub pun krab .. I mean thank you.

Moral of the story: if police stop you then they are making an effort. Just let them check. Long time ago, if the Police are hungry, they will just set up road blocks to collect enough for breakfast n a ciggie. Don't give them a hard time, can? Policemen also human what.

That's why I always bring my passport with me when I travel outside Singapore.

If they want to they'll play technical discrepancies with you even if you've a passport photocopy.

As foreigners we're already on the losing end when we're on their turf.

With the exception of Vietnam and Dannok Hotels which they'll safe keep your passport until you check out. :D
